    SBS Bühnentechnik - DRESDYN

In 2012, the Helmholtz-Zentrum Dresden-Rossendorf (HZDR) research laboratory was looking for a partner for the DRESDYN project, a unique infrastructure project devoted to experiments that are not performed anywhere else in the world. This partner needed to be willing to assume full responsibility for the construction of the infrastructure – from engineering and production to assembly and commissioning. After a call for tender across Europe, the contract was awarded to SBS Bühnentechnik GmbH.

A 20-tonne cylinder rotates ten times per second around an axis with an adjustable inclination. At the same time, the entire assembly rotates on a turntable at a rate of one revolution per second around a second, vertical axis. It was a huge challenge to manage and control the tonnes of moving masses, including the resulting gyroscopic moment.
