The successful completion of the Kraftwerk Mitte project has created a new centre for culture and creativity in the heart of Dresden. In addition to a music academy, event location and plenty of space for young, dynamic companies and start-ups, a new home has also been provided for two of the city’s cultural institutions.
Dresden State Operetta and the tjg. theatre junge generation, both of which were previously located on the city outskirts, have been given a great new home in which they share the foyer and various functional rooms. Kraftwerk Mitte offers sufficient space for simultaneous performances, with each institution having their own dedicated staff and independent structures.
The design of Kraftwerk Mitte brilliantly combines the old and the new. The turbine hall of the former combined heat and power station, with its rusty steel girders and old loading crane, now serves as a foyer. There are four stages in the new annex, including the auditorium for Dresden State Operetta with seating for 700 and the large stage of the tjg. theatre junge generation, which seats 350. There is also an additional small stage and a studio space. A rehearsal tower offers further rehearsal rooms.
The Kraftwerk Mitte was officially opened in December 2016 to sold-out performances.
